Make A Healthy Diet Part Of Your Skin Care Routine

No matter how many skin care products you buy, or how much they cost, what food you buy is more important for a healthy skin. The food you eat affects the regeneration of the skin, its suppleness and elasticity. Throughout our lives, the food we consume provides the fuel that enables our bodies to operate efficiently. Energy, rejuvenation, healing and functioning are all affected by the food you eat. Use the nutritional guidelines below to make a healthy diet part of your skin care routine.

Hydration - Staying hydrated is important for a healthy dermis, as our bodies consist mainly of water. Avoid drinks that contain caffeine as it acts like a diuretic, dehydrating your body rather than hydrating it. Drink six to eight glasses of water a day to keep your body and skin hydrated. Sports beverages should be used during very active periods or when playing sport to replace electrolytes in your body. Check the label for sugar and caffeine though, as they do not rehydrate you.

Antioxidants - these help our bodies grow and regenerate, and  help fight ‘free radicals’ that our skin is exposed to. Fresh fruit and vegetables are the best source of antioxidants. The brightly colored skins of fruits and veggies contain myriads of these antioxidants, so don’t peel your apples! Raw or slightly blanched items are best, as cooking depletes the levels of antioxidants in food.

Well-Balanced Diet - The right fuel will make your body work optimally, just as with an automobile engine. Roller coaster weight gain is unhealthy for your body and your skin, as weight gain and subsequent loss takes its toll on your organs and your dermis. When you pick up weight, your skin is stretched and loses its elasticity, leaving you with wrinkled flaps of skin when you lose weight again. Maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle will keep your skin healthy and smooth.

Vitamins and Minerals – In its list of daily requirements, the FDA has set the recommendations for intake of specific vitamins and minerals. As it is very difficult to meet those requirements consistently through diet alone, most physicians recommend a multi-vitamin as part of your daily regimen. A multi vitamin does not replace proper nutrition though, and you should eat at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables, 3 or more ounces of wholegrain products and 3 cups of low-fat dairy products each day. A healthy diet will be visible in your healthy, glowing skin.
